Ola halts electric car plans for at least two years

Ola car design patent

Ola Electric has temporarily paused its electric car launch plans as it wants to focus on expanding its e-scooter business at the moment, Reuters reported. Sources confirm that Bhavish Aggarwal, founder of the SoftBank-backed company, has put the initiative on hold for at least two years. Reuters could not obtain a response from the company.

Ola Electric car: what all is known

The Ola electric car, in development for some time, was seen in a first patent image that surfaced online a year ago. It revealed a sleek sports car bodystyle, which differed significantly from earlier teasers that suggested multiple looks and body styles.

A source said that Ola had held preliminary talks with several auto component suppliers and had even created a car model designed on the lines of a BMW luxury sedan at its UK studio.

According to Reuters, when the homegrown EV brand revives its car project, it will focus on an affordable mass-market vehicle, moving away from its plans of launching a premium sports car previewed last year.

Ola motorcycle project: latest update

Ola recently shared an image on social media showcasing a battery pack that looked bigger than the one found on most Indian e-scooters, and wrapped by a tubular frame. The image also revealed a front sprocket and chain final drive, similar to the setups on the Ultraviolette F77 Mach 2 and Matter Aera electric bikes in India. While there is no official update, Ola's first e-bike could potentially debut globally as early as next month.
